(A post-war rehabilitation project)

Duration of the project
January to December 2007

Funding
Agence Catalogne de Développement: 150 000 €
Local contribution: 11 700 €

Objective and description
The Akkar, an underprivileged agricultural region in the North of Lebanon, was heavily affected by the July-August 2006 war between Lebanon and Israel . In addition to the destruction of infrastructure resulting from the air bombardment and the direct losses inflicted on the crops, economy in the region has badly suffered from the recession that followed the war.

The families that already lived in fragile conditions before the conflict, found themselves facing a very difficult situation with the loss of the much needed income; most of them having no savings to make new investments.

The specific objective of the project is to help in the development of low scale cattle raising and thus provide immediate and stable income for the most affected rural families.

The project involves the distribution of cows to 43 families, providing technical and veterinarian assistance and helping with the commercialization of the dairy products generated.

Beneficiaries
43 families (around 215 indivitual) to receive each 2 cows.
100 cattle raisers that would benefit from the training workshops and technical assistance.
