The LEAD Program
Dental Hygiene sessions for school children
As per the beginning of June 2008, Dental and Oral Hygiene sessions had been conducted by specialists in 41 elementary and intermediate schools in the regions of Akkar (15 schools), Chouf (10 schools), Tripoli (10 schools) and Zghrata (6 schools), benefiting over 5,000 student and 225 teachers.
Dentists from the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) conducted the sessions in coordination with the schools directors and more specifically with the health educators of the schools.
The sessions provided description on the morphology of teeth, information about teeth decay and consequences, risk factors including nutritional factors and sports injuries.
There was emphasis on the importance of installing proper oral habits from a young age to prevent decay and other dental problems. The importance of brushing the teeth frequently and properly using fluoride toothpastes was highlighted.
The schools health educators participated in the sessions as part of the process of engaging the schools in the process of health awareness for sustainability purposes.
Dental hygiene kits and flyers developed and produced by the LEAD Program were distributed at the end of the sessions. Posters were provided to the school directors and the health educator. Improvement in knowledge was tested by the distribution of succinct pre and post test questionnaires.
More than 5,000 students as well as about 225 school staff benefited from the sessions showing great interest and participating actively in the sessions.
