The LEAD Program

Sessions on Drug, Alcohol, Tobacco and Narghile Prevention for school children

As per the beginning of June 2008, sessions on Drug, Alcohol, Tobacco and Narghile Prevension had been conducted by specialists in 27 elementary and intermediate schools in the regions of Akkar (8 schools), Chouf (11 schools), Tripoli (3 schools) and Zghrata (5 schools), benefiting over 2,000 students and 100 teachers.

A session at the Rachiine Intermediate Mixed School (Zgharta), The overall purpose of these awareness sessions was to prevent and delay the uptake of tobacco, alcohol and other harmful drugs among elementary, intermediate and secondary students through sensitizing them to the signs/signals/dangers of drug use and abuse.

These awareness sessions were conducted to increase the children's knowledge about harmful effects of smoking including narghile use and alcohol, or of using other harmful drugs such as cannabis, and heroin. They intended also to correct misconceptions that alcohol, tobacco, narghile and other drug use is a social normative or acceptable behavior.

Students from intermediate and secondary levels were targeted by the sessions. Since the age of onset for starting smoking cigarettes and narghile is around 11 in Lebanon, younger students from elementary cycle 2 level were also included.

The school director, the health educator (if available) and other school staff were engaged in the implementation process of the sessions in the scope of schools mobilization and for ensuring sustainability of the project activities

The sessions were interactive and the students participated actively. They were very interested and asked many questions. Many of them identified with the sessions' content and raised their hands to report personal family experiences.

The sessions were evaluated by pre and post test questionnaires. Monitoring and evaluation forms were also distributed to the school staff attending the sessions.
