The seminar was jointly organized by the RMF and the UNDP (United Nations Development Program). It was part of a common project that had started with meetings to discuss the problems and difficulties that cooperative associations face in Lebanon. 200 cooperative members were present as well as the General Director of the Ministry of Cooperatives, lawyers and legislators. The seminar focused on the legal and legislative framework under which cooperatives work in Lebanon and proposed changes to the laws to be presented to the Lebanese legislators. In opening the seminar, Mrs Nayla Moawad stressed the need for legal reforms to the present law that dates from 1964. Mrs Mona Hammam, the resident representative of the UNDP, mentioned the high benefit of similar discussions in order to identify the real problems and difficulties that cooperatives are facing. The members of cooperatives attending the seminar highlighted that the problems they face come from the texts of the present law and their application. |
