Summary:

This national seminar about Violence in schools was organized by RMF through ACCESS-MENA Project, in collaboration with the Higher Council for Childhood, and Save the Children Sweden, under the patronage of the Minister of Education and Higher Education Mr Khaled Kabbani.

The forum hosted approximately 180 participants, who were from different NGOs, ministers, MPs, TV stations, and key personalities from the social field. 15 children were present and were active in the participation.

The objective of the seminar was to sensitize the stakeholders from the government, NGO's and international agencies about violence against children in schools in general, and also to discuss laws against corporal punishment in schools and bring out suggestions and recommendations on that subject.

Mrs Sanaa Awada from HCC welcomed the audience, and introduced the Minister of Education and Higher Educations Mr. Khaled Kabbani, the Minister of Social Affairs Mrs Nayla Moawad, the regional director of Save the Children-Sweden Mrs Elisabeth Johnsson and the General Secretary of the Higher Council for Childhood Dr. Elie Mekhayel. They all gave short introductory speeches.

Mr Kabbani insisted on the importance of a safe environment in schools, and the impact of violence against children on drop-out rate. He also stressed the Ministry's strong involvement in improving the legislation against violence.

Mrs Moawad spoke about the importance of respecting the child's dignity and rights, that will ensure the good development of his personality; and insisted on finding alternatives to punishment in schools.
