Theme:
Child Forum for Working Children
Places:
The House of Lawyers, Museum area, Beirut.
Summary:
The forum was organized by the RMF through ACCESS-MENA Project in partnership with the Higher Council for Childhood, the Ministry of Labor unit for combat of child labor in Lebanon, the assembly of committees for the rights of the child, ILO, the Syndicate of Lawyers, World Vision and other organizations.

Approximately 120 participants attended the forum, representing various NGOs, members of parliament, ministers, TV stations, and key persons in the social field. 60 working children were present and they were the most involved in the forum.

The objective of the forum was to meet with the stakeholders from the government, NGOs and international agencies to discuss laws against corporal punishment in schools and bring out suggestions and recommendations on that subject.

In the plenary the moderator Mrs. Rabiaa Zayyat welcomed the audience, and presented the Minister of labor Mr. Tarrad Hamada and Mr. Raymond Chedid president of the association of children’s rights who explained the objectives of the forum.

Six children read clauses 182 and 138 of the international labor law, and clauses number 22 and 23 of the Lebanese labor law, related to children’s rights and working children.

A discussion between the children and Mrs. Zayyat followed, and experiences lived by the children were brought up.

Questions were then asked by the audience to the children and the stakeholders from the government NGOs and international agencies to try finding solutions to the problem of working children and drop out of schools caused by the corporal punishment in public schools.

To conclude the event, the final recommendations of the forum were read by two children.
