Round Table Discussion
Theme:
In Defense of Capitalism
Place:
RMF offices, Ashrafieh, Beirut
Summary:

The debate was organized in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation.

The speaker, Mr. Johan Norberg, Swedish writer of the award-winning book 'In Defense of Global Capitalism', refuted popular criticisms of globalization. He argued that global capitalism results in the sharing of new technologies and ideas between more developed and less developed countries.

Mr. Norberg stressed that global capitalism practiced correctly - truly free local and global markets without interference from government policies - is a positive force. Rather, it is the subsidies and tariffs imposed by governments that are perpetuating poverty.

The audience of 21 academics and students was equally wary of condoning global capitalism and fought for certain cases that need state protectionism. The heated debate lasted for over an hour.
