Psychological and Psychosocial support activities (ACCESS)
Summary:

These psychological support activities were part of the ACCESS-MENA project. The beneficiaries of the activities were children, parents and some of team members in the project.

The main activities conducted during this period included the following: continuing the building of trust, integrating further the different team members, debriefing team members, one on one counseling with students and mothers, group activities within the centers. Many interventions took place including:

  1. One on one counseling with children in need.

  2. Discussion groups with parents.

  3. Discussion group with students on stress and exams (this came out as a need for the children in the South region).

  4. Sessions on communicating and listening.

  5. Sessions on de-pathologizing behavior (i.e. not every time a kid shouts or refuses makes him “sick” or in need of “therapy”).

  6. Coordination with the social worker to organize games that focus on the problem we need to treat and to assign roles for some of the children regarding to their situation in order to help them adjust some behaviors or to improve some skills.

  7. Sessions aiming at discovering the strengths of each child: We invited every child to present himself, to talk about his hobbies, about what he likes and dislikes doing. We try to find out a trait, an activity or any special hobby that distinguish him. We assign this point to the child and then we try to reinforce it to help him find a place in the group and in life in general. This reinforcement will continue through many sessions or games because this is very important for every child to discover a positive side of his personality that helps him communicates in an appropriate way and makes him feel more confident.

  8. Monthly meetings with all the teams of social workers and recreational activities in the ACCESS regions: the psychologists give them advices and try to help them improve their work with the ACCESS children by evaluating their way of work, the vocabulary they use in their session and understanding the problems they encounter. In addition to giving them information needed on how to deal with children suffering from psychological problems.
